Sharing a pattern for a one-peace wrap cardigan for my baby-girl

baby-girl short-sleeve cardigan

Finally, Marge can try her new short-sleeve cardigan in the colours of a red poppy and a blue knapweed field! As I wrote in a previous post, I've searched for a nice and not so common pattern for a baby-girl cardigan, but haven't found any, and decided to design one by myself. It came out so nice and work on it was so enjoyable, that it would be just wrong to keep the pattern within myself rather than share it.

Also I would be really happy to hear that someone used this pattern and managed to make this cardigan. So, if you intend to try this, please, take a picture of a result and share it with me!

This is a rather easy pattern of a beautiful one-peace wrap cardigan for a little baby girl.
Marge is two month old now and 62 cm long. This cardigan is a bit larger size. But you can make your own measurements and crochet cardigan of any size you need. I'll explain you, how.

The whole work consists of 4 stages:
1) after taking measurements, crochet a shoulders part (I'm not sure about professional terminology, so I'll just call it "shoulders part"). It is very similar to crocheting a granny square, only without it's center;
2) crochet a waist band;
3) crochet body part;
4) edging.

First of all, you should take some measurements. The easiest way to do this is to take any of your baby's tops (I took Marge's sleeper) and measure it. What you need is to measure the width of a neck hole (N), bust width (W) and sleeve aperture depth (S).

As you can see (you can click on the pictures to get a larger view), I've got N = 11 cm, W = 26 cm and S = 10 cm.

Now count Z = (W - N) / 2 and BC segment length as (S - Z) * 2.

CD segment length equals N and DE equals BC.

I've got Z = 7.5 cm, CD = 11 cm, DE and BC = 5 cm.

I'll refer to the mark up of this scheme further.

You will need yarn of three colours.
I used Turkish cotton yarn Alize Bella of a red, coral and cream colour in my work.

Marge's two month and night rains

The time has come when I have to be very careful while walking down the street under a lush green roof of leaves. Here and there are caterpillars ready to become butterflies hanging down from trees right in front of my eyes. And nothing can scare me more than caterpillars and dragonflies. I don't know why these insects have such a strong impact on me, but every time I see them I get at least goose bumps. I would even scream in some cases. And today me and Marge met three caterpillars on our way to a scheduled two-month-visit to a pediatrician. I'm sharing a few photos taken on our way.

All these reflections just fascinate me!

Yes, our little baby girl is two month old already! She grew a lot, we spent past month under a sunshine of her smiles. She likes to talk and also learned to cry when she desperately needs something. It's not like she hasn't cried before, but this cry is somehow different from the one she did in her first month. So this is also a sign that she is getting older. Past few days of her life are also remarkable for Marge's discovery of her fists. She stacks them into her mouth and intently munches her fingers with a unconcerned look. It seems that I have to hurry with a mobile I wanted to make for her, or I'll miss the right time.

As Marge grows her sisters change as well. Their intention to help me with Marge is so huge that I can step aside and just watch their energy flowing in a right place. I haven't seen so much initiative for months! They wash dishes (even though it has been my prerogative before), help me cook, hang clean clothes, through away used diapers. They even don't mind entertaining Marge for a little bit if I need to leave the room for a moment. I am really proud of my girls!

I've started a new crochet cardigan for Marge lately. I've searched for a nice and not so common pattern for it, but haven't found any. So it was decided to make one by myself. I actually have already started bringing to life my idea and crocheted four rows, but then realized, that I had made a mistake in the very first stitch of the first row! Can you imagine my disappointment when I had to rip it all out and start over my project!

Though May is almost over, it is still enough time for mayflowers to bloom and May thunderstorms to moisturize the air through nights. I saw a great thundercloud through kids room's window yesterday. I hardly had time to take a picture, the cloud had covered all of the skies and it started pouring. However, it didn't rain too long, not more than a few minutes. Now i'm looking at my daughters' paintings of a rainy day from their art class and feeling really inspired to paint one by myself. I wish I had a time for this!

Oh, I love summer rain with it's warm puddles!

Pattern of a crocheted hat with flower for a girl

All of a sudden a heat wave came across Riga.  But it won't prevent me from sharing a pattern of Veronika's new hat.

cotton green crochet hat with flower

cotton green crochet hat

My daughter wanted a hat with a flower, so I crocheted one nice flower too. I used Indigo colour from my favorite Alize Bella cotton yarns to make the hat fit daughter's blue coat.

But before I start, some pics of today: a morning after the first thunderstorm in Latvia this year. Air after the rain became moist and warm.

Back to the pattern, I drew a scheme (pictures can be clicked for a large picture), but to be on the safe side, I wrote it down too.

So, here goes the pattern of a crochet hat for a 5-year old girl (head diameter 50 cm (19.5 inch)).

 Pattern

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • rep = repeat
Start with colour "Acid".
1) Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to make a ring.
2) Chain 2,  work 11 dc into the ring, sl st into 2d ch of initial chain-2.

Blooming lilac and a new crochet hat for Veronika

It's still pretty chilly outside. Wind keeps bringing cold air from the north. Nevertheless, days are sunny enough for lilac to start it's blooming. And now an aroma of it is everywhere.

When I pass it by, I can't help but stop and deeply inhale it's pleasant  fragrance. No wonder I always feel great temptation to gather one huge lilac bouquet. But it is something I won't do no matter how strongly I want it.

We can wait for warmth till late May here in Latvia. Our spring is a time when kids are still wearing light hats and scarfs. So it is very disappointing and really inconvenient that all shops have already prepared summer collections, and you cannot buy a new hat for a kid right now just like that when you need it.

Luckily, it's not a problem for someone who likes to crochet. A few hours of a pure joy, and Veronika got a new hat!

Yes, Marge obviously has to grow a little bit more to fit sister's hat.

I used cotton yarn Alize Bella Acid and Cream for this hat.

Also the 15th of May is Family day in Latvia, so I'm sharing photos of my beloved daughters!

Cream.

A few days ago I decided to address an issue of hairpins that use to get lost and made Veronika a fringe.

Being a mom is..

Vintage pie and tea

Being a mom means killing a child inside your head for it's resurrection in your eternal memory later to give you an ability of making decisions not only in order to please yourself or meet your own wishes.

Being a mom is love.

Being a mom means giving your baby a chance to correct his mistake instead of blaming for his failure.

It means giving a hug, instead of a preach.

Being a mom takes a lot of patience to listen even when you think there's nothing worthy to be said and be quite even when you are overflowing with words.

Also it is understanding, there is no doubt that what's need to be done has to be done, but the most important need is trying to reach peace without war and do it without yelling.

And it is understanding, that your negative evaluation of a deed or event your kid is excited about won't make him feel the same way as you do about it, but he will definitely feel a rejection from you. So save your esteems for someone you don't like.

Being a mom means trying not to fall into habit of controlling every step of your precious child while taking care of his safety. It also means keeping noticing even the smallest initiative of your little one and treat it with care, trying not to suppress it.

Be still and stable as a rock, when your child is all like the ocean in a stormy day, to be able to help this ocean to calm down only by means of your tender and secure voice and look.

Letting him grow, watching aside and wondering, how your kid's personality develops, but not trying to change it your way. Once given a life your child will live it by himself.

Yes, being a mom is a huge work. So I thank my mom she did it for me once.

I love You, mom!

And, mom, thanks for that delicious pie You made us on a Mother day.

Dear english readers: please scroll down.

Felt pink heart

Being a mother of three kids

It's a real blessing to be a mother of your own third child! You know everything about baby care itself. You've seen all the problems that might occur when a new baby joins a family and someone becomes other's big sister. And now you have an opportunity to do it right. Or you think you have it.

Sadly, the truth always differs from how you've imagined these things. Your older children are in a kindergarden all day long while you are staying at home with your little one and miss them. You're dreaming that the first you do when they get back home will be hugs to release their tension after a day in the kindergarden (newborn could be held by a granny for that little moment). But what really happens is that you are feeding your almost fallen asleep baby in a bedroom and listening your older ones fighting in a hall and granny lecturing them for their loud behavior. It's completely not how you wanted things to happen. You're planning to devote your evening to all these exiting activities with kids, but what really happens, you are too tired to do anything but sitting relaxed in a kitchen with a cup of tea.

So I tried to do at least one thing in a different way today. I tried not to rush daughters' bedtime routines. I usually read them a story before going to sleep. Today I did it as well, but with only difference -- we were in my bedroom, so the little one could lay at my bed and stay calm (usually she is pretty cranky while I'm trying to do both: handle her and read the story in our kids room). And it went well! I wasn't so very tired as I always am after this, and girls went to sleep without everyday scenes. And that's a success!

There is a tiny pink heart on a picture above. My Veronika sew it for Marge yesterday. A little gesture from one little girl reveals her feelings about her sister. This love is like a fragile flower, that can be so easily trampled by clumsy parents. I really hope I'll manage to grow it nice and big this time.

And one more family picture with Anastasia and Marge on it.

Dear english readers: please scroll down.

It's getting chilly outside

May came to Riga with a cold windy weather. Actually it's hard to believe that thermometer isn't lying about 7 degrees Celsius while looking at so confidently green trees outside. On the bright side, this spring chill gives a great opportunity to try out new oatmeal cookies recipe.

Daughters brought me pictures of sunflowers from their last art class and one real bouquet of dandelions. A big bouquet of tulips in a vase next to dandelions is from my husband.

I'm pretty positive in my desire to crochet myself new mittens. But while I was looking for some cool ideas in Pinterest, I unintentionally got inspired by crocheted baby boots. It won't hurt to warm Marge's feet while it's so chilly here. Experimenting right now.

Warm and sunny April is on my last picture -- this is how it'll stay in my memory.

Dear english readers: please scroll down.

Botanical Garden

It was a great day for photo hunt because of all the sunshine yesterday. Even though, strong gusts of icy northern wind made me wish I had mittens and a winter hat. Marge was hiding from the wind in her new baby carriage, that we had bought spontaneously the day before. Me and my husband decided that we should use it on a bad weather days like this, while Marge doesn't mind sleeping in it during our walk times. My second daughter has never had a baby carriage (I was perfectly content with my baby sling collection for this purpose), so it was very unusual feeling for me to have a walk this way.

The Botanical Garden of Riga (LU Botāniskais dārzs) is not just a place where you can find blooming rhododendrons and magnolias, palms, almost hundred years old pipal tree and giant water lily (victoria). This place has a history. There was a summer countryside estate with a well-designed park a long time ago. Several buildings are still there from that time and have a status of architectural monuments. Unfortunately, the manor house was unassembled by it's last owners (the Wolfshmidts) right before the land was bought by government. A greenhouse was built in it's place. Just think of it: a linden alley in the garden is almost two hundred years old! The garden itself will celebrate centenary in ten years.
